Great Hill Pond is located in Portland. It is an artificial impoundment in the Connecticut River Drainage Basin. It was created by the construction of a 10 ft. earthen dike on Great Hill Pond Brook. The watershed is 768 acres of mostly undeveloped woods with little residential and agricultural development. The lake is fed by Rattlesnake Brook and a small stream from the north. The southern half of the lake is heavily developed with residences; however, the northern shore is mostly wooded.
The transparency of the lake is fair with visibility of 5 -6 ft. in the late summer. The bottom of the lake consists of sand, rubble and mud. The fishing is reportedly fair for largemouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, black crappie, sunfish, bullheads and white catfish.
